What Does a Cat Musical Sound Like?
A cat-themed musical was the result of a Kickstarter campaign that raised $30,000 to produce a musical that explores the origins of the word “cat”.
“It’s not a new idea to explore the origin of the term ‘cat’, and we wanted to create something a little more contemporary,” says director Chris Bickerton.
“Cat was born, and this is a story about a cat that started a revolution.
We have the cat-centric world of television and movies, but it’s not really the place to explore it, so we’re exploring the world of music and theatre.”
As with other Kickstarter projects, Cat’s the Word was conceived of with the idea that it would be a great musical to showcase the artistry of the music industry, and it’s definitely the kind of thing that’s worth taking a chance on.
The music itself is composed by British composer John Krasinski, who recently recorded a musical based on a story from his novel Cat’s in the Hat.
“The musical takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the music business is under assault by the world’s most dangerous cat-related criminal organizations,” Krasinkys tells us.
“I wanted to capture the essence of the cat, to capture that element that’s not only very popular in pop culture, but in the music world.”
The show is also directed by actor Adam Gatz, who previously performed as the lead singer of the band Cats in the Hood.
The Kickstarter campaign has raised over $15,000 in total.
The show will be performed at the University of Chicago’s Harold Washington Theatre, and will premiere on October 26.
